How to differentiate between American diamond and real diamond

How to differentiate between American diamond and real diamond

In India, diamonds have always been a symbol of luxury, love, and legacy, from the sparkling engagement rings seen in Bollywood films to heirloom jewellery passed down through generations. But with so many lookalikes available today, telling the difference between a real diamond and an American diamond (often known as cubic zirconia) can be tricky. They both dazzle under the light, both look stunning in jewellery, and both can easily fool the untrained eye.

So, how can you really tell them apart? Whether you’re shopping for your first diamond ring or simply want to make sure you are getting your money’s worth, here’s everything you need to know about spotting the difference between a real diamond and its glittering dupe.

2/11

What exactly is an American diamond?

Before we jump into the differences, let’s get one thing straight, American Diamond isn’t actually a diamond. It’s a popular term used in India for Cubic Zirconia (CZ), a man-made crystal that closely resembles a real diamond. It’s created in a lab using zirconium dioxide and is designed to imitate the look and brilliance of natural diamonds.

The reason it’s called an “American Diamond” is mostly marketing, the term was coined decades ago when synthetic stones became popular in the US jewellery market. They were affordable, sparkly, and durable, which made them an instant hit among fashion-conscious buyers who wanted the diamond look without the heavy price tag.

While real diamonds are mined from the earth (or created as lab-grown diamonds using carbon under high pressure and heat), American Diamonds are entirely synthetic, made through industrial processes.

3/11

The price tells a story

Let’s start with the obvious, the price tag. Real diamonds, even the smallest ones, come with a high cost because they are rare, naturally formed, and graded according to strict quality standards. Their value depends on the famous “4Cs”: Cut, Clarity, Colour, and Carat.

On the other hand, American Diamonds are incredibly affordable. You can get a large, brilliant CZ stone for a fraction of what a small real diamond would cost. So, if you spot a huge stone being sold at a suspiciously low price, it’s almost certainly not real.

As Indian jewellers often say, “If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.”

4/11

Brilliance and sparkle

At first glance, both real and American Diamonds shine beautifully but the sparkle is subtly different. A real diamond reflects light in three ways:

Brilliance (white light reflection)

Dispersion or Fire (rainbow-like flashes)

Scintillation (sparkle when the stone moves)

A genuine diamond’s sparkle is sharp and intense, with a mix of white and coloured flashes. Meanwhile, American Diamonds tend to give off a more rainbow-like glow that feels glassy or overly bright.

If you ever notice that the stone sparkles too much with colourful light reflections, it’s likely a CZ. Real diamonds have a more sophisticated, subtle sparkle that never feels flashy.

5/11

The fog test

Here’s a simple at-home trick. Hold the stone close to your mouth and breathe on it as if you’re fogging up a mirror. A real diamond won’t retain the fog, it will disappear instantly because diamonds disperse heat quickly.

An American Diamond, however, will stay fogged for a few seconds because it doesn’t have the same thermal conductivity. This quick test won’t damage your jewellery and can easily tell you which one you’re holding.

6/11

Weight difference

Cubic Zirconia is denser than a real diamond. If you were to hold two stones of the same size - one real and one American Diamond, the CZ would feel heavier.

Of course, this is easier to notice when comparing loose stones rather than mounted jewellery, but jewellers often use this clue as an indicator. The difference might be small, but it’s there.

7/11

Hardness and durability

Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth, ranking 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. That means they can cut or scratch almost anything but nothing can scratch them (except another diamond).

American Diamonds, or CZs, are much softer, ranking around 8–8.5. They can get scratched over time, lose their shine, or even develop cloudy spots if not cared for properly. That’s one reason why CZ jewellery tends to lose its brilliance after a few years, while real diamonds sparkle forever, quite literally.

8/11

Look for certification

Every authentic diamond should come with certification from a recognised gem authority like the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or IGI (International Gemological Institute). These certificates verify the diamond’s cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

American Diamonds, being synthetic and inexpensive, usually don’t come with any certification and if they do, it’s likely from a local lab for branding purposes, not authenticity.

So, whenever you are buying diamond jewellery in India, especially from high-end stores in places like Zaveri Bazaar or Karol Bagh, always ask for a GIA or IGI certificate. It’s your best proof of a real stone.

9/11

The water drop test

Another easy home test, drop your stone in a glass of water. A real diamond, because of its density, will sink straight to the bottom. An American Diamond might hover or fall slower because it’s slightly lighter and less dense.

Of course, this test isn’t foolproof, but it can give you a quick idea when you’re in doubt.

10/11

Why it matters

In India, diamonds aren’t just about fashion, they carry emotional value. Whether it’s a wedding ring, a mangalsutra pendant, or a family heirloom, buying a diamond often marks a milestone moment. That’s why it’s so important to know what you’re paying for.

American Diamonds are beautiful and affordable, making them perfect for everyday jewellery, imitation sets, or travel-friendly pieces. But if you’re investing in something timeless, like an engagement ring or bridal set, it’s worth going for a certified real diamond.

11/11

Know what lies beneath

Both real diamonds and American Diamonds have their place in the jewellery world. One is a precious gemstone born deep within the Earth over billions of years; the other is a man-made marvel designed for affordability and accessibility.

If you love sparkle but don’t want to burn a hole in your pocket, American Diamonds are a great choice. But if you value timelessness, legacy, and unmatched brilliance, a real diamond will always hold its worth - in beauty and emotion alike.

So the next time you are at the jeweller’s counter, take a closer look, do a little testing, and remember: it’s not just about the shine, it’s about what’s real beneath it.
