It is festive season, so why not celebrate it with handloom in style? But given the choice of handloom weaves, textiles and styles nowadays, putting together a wardrobe for the season can be certainly puzzling. Here’s a point-by-point guide…
- Attention-grabbing sarees like organza with a silk border and moga with a satin pallu with different textures has to be a first on the must-stock list.
- Another way to wow is to go for a designer piece that juxtaposes different types of borders using varying yarn textures. For, instance, moga silk known for its substantive solidity can be mixed with tissue for its sheen, and silk and sheer organza play off different transparencies.
- Traditional Kanjeevarams are still the mainstay. They have a nice drape, use gold zari liberally and come in deep jewel tones with contrasting borders known as korvai. Look for pieces where the pallu, border and the body of the saree are woven separately, and interlocked together delicately.
- Another festive favourite is the traditional araku or pink red saree replaced with bolder palettes like plasma red. To update the look, go for fresher colours like baby peach, lemons and sea green in the Jamdani weaving technique. Jamdani weave is an eternal body of textile work that you can’t stop admiring, there is so much diversity — in colours and motifs.
- For Indian outfits, go for a floor-length Anarkali – just make sure, it is flattering and free-flowing. Or wear lehengas with well-designed kurtis. If you don’t wear sarees, go for handwoven pieces as separates.
