Prabal Gurung has done it again! He has been awarded the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear on Monday at the Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall. Prabal had been a rising star in the international fashion industry ever since he dressed US First Lady Michelle Obama for the Governor’s Dinner.

Then on, he went on to dress A-list Hollywood celebrities like Demi Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Thandie Newton, Leighton Meester and Kate Hudson. His next big step was when he designed for fashion retailer J Crew. The Nepalese designer, who now lives in New York, had earlier spoken to TOI, saying that he “loves dressing the thinking man’s sex symbol.” Gurung’s Spring-Summer 2011 was thus very minimal, sticking to the basics of the silhouette and using basic colours-cyan, yellow and red-to colour block. He unleashed his ‘wilder’ side with his Fall-Winter 2011 with a more daring, sensual approach to womenswear.
Never one to play safe, Prabal admitted that he had to push himself out of his comfort zone to compete with brands like Chanel and Valentino and that his is a more ‘international’ and less ‘American’ market. Prabal went to the Awards gala with his model date, Victoria’s Secret Angeel, Alessandra Ambrosio, who wore a red gown with a plunging neckline. Obviously, a Prabal Gurung!
