Meet the designers behind Sushant Singh Rajput’s outfit in 'Raabta' movie
Sushant Singh Rajput's recent movie 'Raabta' got a lot of attention for his warrior look in the movie. The actor is seen sporting braids, kajal, and tattoos for the portrayal of 'Jilan' in the movie.
His past life outfit was a visual treat, which was designed by Delhi designer duo – Vipul Amar and Harsheen Arora from The V Renaissance (TVR).
The label specialises in leather designs and had less than a month to create the much-talked outfit of Sushant. Recently, we had a conversation with TVR to know what went behind the making of this outfit. And here's what they had to say:
How did the collaboration come about?
The costume designer of this movie, Maxima Basu was looking for leather experts. Through a common point of contact, she reached us. We can still recall the time she entered our studio—when we were in process of making our vintage collection. She had a glance at the collection and that's when she told us they are looking for something similar.
How would you relate your label with Sushant's outfit?
At TVR, we focus on the aesthetics, the fluidity of motion, which are the hallmarks of our brand. When we created the custom outfit for the character, we ensured the same hallmarks of our brand. We wanted to translate the outfit into a visual experience. You won’t believe, but our research was for this armour was intense too! We actually took realistic situational experiences like animal attacks, terrain and ergonomic aspects into consideration.
What was the concept behind his outfit?
The costume had to tell Jilan’s story and that’s exactly the story we aimed at narrating. During the process of creation, the costume went through everything that we imagined the character to have gone through. The outfit was supposed to be the character’s second skin. Something he wore through his various conquests of different kingdoms which entailed him to go through everything from weather conditions to animal attacks.
Was there any story you wanted to tell through the outfit?
We made sure that the costume went through all the condition and influences on leather like scars and stains.
The marks and scars on the leather were meant to tell Jilan’s story and what all conditions he has been in. Each piece was been created without a single seam because we realized that the character would not have had the luxury of threads or needles given the starkness of the terrain and the sheer rawness of the era.
What kind of materials have you used and how much time did it take?
With films, we are usually always on a tightrope where time is concerned. We had about 20 days to craft the pieces. TVR’s special hand-finished leather was used for the costume. Age old techniques of crafting and finishing leather were used to create the pieces.
Was there any difficulty faced during the research?
When you are creating something novel, it is always met with new challenges but they are all at the moment.
How was it working with Sushant Singh Rajput & the director, Dinesh Vijan?
Sushant Singh Rajput is a great actor and communicated his vision clearly to us. It is always great working with thorough professionals. In fact, they both were very clear on the vision they had for the era and the character. It was all communicated with a great clarity.
