Niki Mahajan was influenced by the hues that colour Indian festivals for her summer collection The Indian summer is a time filled with tranquility and colour. The season of amaranthus, chrysanthemum, chuski, Holi and Baisakhi often inspire the colour and playful side within us. Taking inspiration from the summer originals, designer Niki Mahajan has created a collection that is reminiscent of the playful summer that has been long forgotten since our childhood days.
A journey back and remembering the joy of those summer months, Niki has created a collection full of colours that pop and fabrics that mischievously play with each other. “The collection is a complete opposite of the dark and grey winter, the collection is filled with fluorescent and neon colours like acidic lime, tangerine orange, lemony yellow, raspberry pink,” says Niki. Incidentally, these fruity shades are in line with the trendiest colours of Spring 2013.
Keeping the scorching weather in mind, the collection has been made using easy flowing silhouettes with extensive use of gossamer fabrics liker tulle, chiffon, georgette. Opaque and sheer fabrics have been effortlessly combined to create a juxtaposed look. To embellish the fabrics the designer has created happy floral patterns and used matte neon sequins, a special type of sequins that help in controlling the bling but at the same time increase the versatility of colours. The silhouettes range from saris and anarkalis to salwar suits and maxi dresses with an ethnic vibe. Simple and breezy, the styles are reminiscent of the designer’s childhood loves. Niki has continued to texture the fabrics using her own special methods of block printing and colour-blocking.
