Confusion within the Indian fashion bodies has made the three Fashion Weeks this month shifting grounds of talent. Designers expected to show at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) in Delhi and the Gitanjali-sponsored Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) in Mumbai have changed camps. They now also have Sumeet Nairs Fashion Foundation of Indias Delhi Fashion Week (DFW) to play around with.
Thankfully, Mumbai had its India Couture Week, out of the way last month!
Says Raghavendra Rathore, Established designers need to move away from infighting within the fashion bodies and concentrate on their work. So I chose to showcase mens and womens wear at the DFW and my safari suits, bandhgalas and masculine line at the LFW in Mumbai. Clearly, the WIFW has missed out on this great designer. Meanwhile, Tarun Tahiliani, Rohit Bal, Anamika Khanna and Malini Ramani also moved away from WIFW and joined DFW. Tarun, additionally, chose Mumbai to present a sponsored event with a jeans brand at LFW.
Many of the younger designers, however, chose to remain common entities between WIFW and LFW. Like Anupama Dayal and Raakesh Agarvwal. Rakesh says, My loyalty to LFW remains so I am participating in Mumbai. But since Im from Delhi, Ive taken a stall at WIFW too. Those who were in Mumbai for LFWs Autumn Winter08 season and have now moved to WIFW include Abdul Halder, Abhishek Dutta, Falguni and Shane Peacock, Sanchita Ajjampur, Urvashi Kaur and Riddhima. Mumbai, nevertheless, snatched Deepika Gehani, Gayatri Khanna, Tarun Tahiliani and Raghavendra Rathore from the capital city.
