Founder of Italian luxury fashion house 'Missoni' Rosita Missoni passes away at 93

Rosita Missoni, the pioneering matriarch of the legendary Italian fashion house Missoni, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, at the age of 93. Renowned for transforming colourful zigzag-patterned knitwear into high fashion and playing a pivotal role in launching Italian ready-to-wear, Rosita left an indelible mark on the global fashion landscape.

In a statement, the Missoni family hailed her as “a visionary figure in the Italian and international fashion world.” Local officials from Gallarate, a small city in northern Italy where the brand was born in 1953, expressed their condolences and celebrated her contributions to the region’s rich artisanal heritage.

Born Rosita Jelmini, she grew up in a family that owned a textile factory specializing in shawls. This background instilled in her a deep appreciation for fabrics and craftsmanship, which later became the cornerstone of Missoni’s distinctive designs. Alongside her husband, Ottavio Missoni, Rosita co-founded the brand, revolutionizing knitwear with bold patterns and vibrant colours that embodied Italian sophistication and creativity.

The Missoni family has endured its share of challenges. In 2013, tragedy struck when Vittorio Missoni, the couple’s son, disappeared in a plane crash near Venezuela. The wreckage was discovered after a six-month search, during which Ottavio Missoni passed away at the age of 92. Despite these hardships, the brand continued to flourish.

In 2018, the family sold a 41.2% stake in the company to Italian investment fund FSI while retaining majority control. Three years later, Rosita’s youngest daughter, Angela Missoni, stepped down as creative director after 24 years, marking the end of an era for the family-run business.

Rosita Missoni’s contributions to fashion extended beyond her innovative designs; she was a trailblazer who helped elevate Italian ready-to-wear on the global stage. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but her legacy will undoubtedly be celebrated worldwide. Fashion world will miss Missoni greatly!
