It was an afternoon that saw the irrepressible Suhel Seth and the an equally composed Ritu Beri being awarded doctorates along with Priti Paul and Kiran Bedi, for their achievements in their respective fields. Suhel said he wasn’t feeling very well, and he kept talking to Ritu on the dais, and alternately scrolling through his mobile. Ritu, on her part, tried her best not to laugh out loud.
And once he was declared Doctor of Arts, and asked to give a speech, his humour surfaced, and he ended by saying he hoped he was worthy of this title. Ritu, on the other hand, kept her Doctor of Fine Arts speech short, stressing on the need to keep educating oneself, and her whole khandaan that had come to watch her, applauded. Kiran, who also got the doctorate from the Rai Foundation for public service, spoke about how she had to abandon a thesis paper once after working on it for almost three years.
There was lunch, but Suhel went away saying he was busy, and we left Ritu posing for photographs in her cape.
