Born in Houston in 1997 to Syrian immigrant parents, she grew up partially in Dubai before pursuing formal art education in the US earning a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and later a MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work, encompassing illustration, animation and ceramics, centres on themes of Arab identity, migration and social justice, and has been featured in outlets like The New Yorker, BBC and the Tate Modern. Beyond her artistic career, Duwaji gained wider attention as the partner of Zohran Mamdani, New York’s newly-elected mayor; the two met via a dating app in 2021 and married in early 2025.
