Ever since the time Jeetendra started wearing his trademark white shoes and since Dorothy tapped her ruby red slippers in The Wizard Of Oz, shoes have played an important part in an actors ensemble. They establish character, personality and even help you solve the crime, if ones been committed. And of course, theres nothing sexier than an actress in a pair of high-heels and nothing much else on.
If she uses her stilettos to impale someone in the film, thats even better.
A sole to take a soul. How poetic.
Jeetendras signature white footwear made people want to walk for more than just a day in his shoes with demand for white shoes going up. And in most of Amitabh Bachchans films back in the day, his entry shot would be marked by the camera first focusing on his dapper shoes and then moving up to his angry young face.
In Yaadon Ki Baraat, the villains (Ajit) shoes tip off Dharmendra that hes the man who murdered his parents ages ago. Shoes have often been used to catch the killer, so to speak. Bloody imprints of size nines on the floor are enough to place them at the scene of the crime. And every pair of shoes has a very typical tread mark thats been worn out in a particular way thus being a dead give-away if they match the wearers shoes.
But shoes arent always the villains. Were off to see the Wizard in our fabulous ruby studded, magical slippers with Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow. Dorothys ruby red slippers - originally silver in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum but changed to red to make use of the introduction of colour in films - were her ticket back home to be with her family and friends who she missed so much. And in Cinderella, the glass slipper she loses at the ball is what helps the Prince find his Cinderella and also get to touch lots of pretty womens feet in the bargain.
Shoes were made for walking, running and dancing. And even talking into. Thats what youll see in the new movie Get Smart, where secret agent Maxwell Smart uses his shoe phone to communicate with headquarters.
Gwyneth Paltrow was recently seen promoting the movie Iron Man in heels so high its a wonder she didnt get airsick. Teetering on platform stilettos, she even required an assistant to lean on. Ah, the lengths wed go to prance around in a lovely pair of shoes. No one knows shoes better than the cast of Sex And The City who paraded in hundreds of different pairs of shoes during the shows six seasons. So much so that the whole DVD box set comes packaged in a shoebox. And the upcoming Sex And The City Movie will undoubtedly see a parade of clattering designer heels hit New York City.
If it werent for boots our heroines wouldnt look so sexy, if it werent for running shoes Forrest Gump wouldnt have been able to run so fast and heroes wouldnt be able to kick those bad guys so hard or look suave in their tuxedos. And hey, wed all like to walk a day in the shoes of our stars.
