The Golden Globes 2012 could well indicate the significant styles of the season The red-carpet season was ushered in with dazzling colours, high-voltage style and some serious sparkle at the Golden Globes 2012. The fashion police, despite their stern stance, could not fault the luxury of the fabrics, the sensuous drape of the gowns or the lavish jewellery that accessorized each ensemble.
From actor
Charlize Theron in her Dior couture gown who channelled the retro look with her beaded headband, to
Sarah Michelle Gellar in a blue-and-white tie-dyed Monique Lhuillier sporting a high-top ponytail, to
Sofia Vergara in a jewel blue Vera Wang, it was a night of glitz, glamour and some fabulous flamboyance.
Interesting trends came to the forefront — whether it was the stack of bangles worn by
Nicole Richie who opted for a Julien Macdonald silver dress, the sleek ponytail style defined by
Amanda Peet or the bling look highlighted by Madonna’s sparkly Reem Acra frock. And while nude coloured dresses seemed to be the perennial favourite, jewel toned ensembles came a close second with ruby red (
Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen), vibrant yellow (
Paula Patton) and green (Zooey Deschanel’s Prada number).
Angelina Jolie wore a floor-length gown in soft cream created by Atelier Versace with a red fold running across the chest, which earned her the best dressed title among fashionistas.
Julianne Moore wore Chanel Couture,
Lea Michele chose Marchesa,
Salma Hayek framed Gucci to perfection and
Freida Pinto wore a stunning Prada dress teamed with Chopard jewels.
Many of the Golden Globe styles this year point to the styles that will rule the fashion arena this year, say Bangalore designers and fashionistas. Says style expert Anu Nagappa, “Colour blocking is back this year, but is far more defined now.
Angelina Jolie’s dress with the red band is an example of this trend. Also this look has moved from day wear to evening attire and accessories are now colour blocked too. The shades of the season will be yellow and green. And as for hemlines, it will be asymetrical right through the summer.” Plunging necklines, fishtale hems, green dresses and men in layered attire were some of the other trends that ruled the red carpet. Fashion expert Deepika Govind found that the amount of cleavage on display very mysterious and powerful. “I am not a fan of this style because I believe that
subtle sexy works best, but it seemed to be very popular. The colour palette was very different from every other year, and there was a dominance of green this time, which will be a popular trend this year. Sleeves are back in style and men wearing waistcoats will be hot too.”
Bling will not go out of fashion either, adds fashion guru Prasad Bidapa who loved the sequins and sparkle on display. “Bling on an outfit makes it pop and will never go out of style. The romantic pale dresses worn by
Jessica Biel and
Kate Beckinsale were very hot. Charlize Theron, however, got my top vote.”
