Do you wear denim in its oh-so conventional avatar? Chances are you don’t, having moved with the times when denim has taken on all sorts of diverse hues. This is not to say that the fabric as we know it, with its identifiable cuts and shapes, is singing the Survival Blues. But it is being moulded in ways we had never seen before.
Consummately chic, pleasingly smart, naturally haute, denim was destined to experience such experimentations someday.
So, it has. Hear designer Vidya Tewari, who views it as a fabric that stimulates one’s creative aspirations. Talking about denim’s reinvention, she says, “During summer, one saw denim tunics, fitted high-waist skirts, wedges, stilettos, and so on.” Tewari believes that denims work superbly as shopping bags because they are sturdy.
Lycra-like stretch material made of denim is also in, giving the outfit or accessory a classy and different look.
Denim’s relaxed feel makes it an automatic choice when one doesn’t need to surrender to a specific dress code. Sneha Nair, a student, says, “I own a pair of denim wedges which has a floral print with dull white laces. It can be teamed up with practically anything.” Sneha also has a pair of ‘happening’ denim bracelet, while she admits that she cannot take her eyes off denim mobile covers, key chains with denim pendants, bags in blue or black stonewashed material and high-waist hot pants in magenta, pink, parrot green and standard white, blue and black colours.
Denim is undergoing a revolution. Footwear store owner Sheetal Darda talks about its popularity with the college-goers and working professionals. “These days, there are many interesting feminine designs in particular. The colours range from pink to beige, while floral prints and laces add to the beauty of the footwear.”
Designer Nachiket Barve says that denim being a versatile fabric can be seen in the avatars of both casual and party wear. “Skirts, waistcoats, booties, headbands, and neckpieces made out of used jeans last long and look good.”
Denim is reinventing itself has a connect with the awareness that the fabric is infinitely mouldable. No matter what you do with it, it can makes heads turn and people look cool.
