Lab-grown gold vs mined gold: What’s the real difference in price, purity, and investment value?

Is lab-grown gold real gold?

Lab-grown gold mainly refers to gold produced or refined outside the traditional mining process using laboratory technologies. Lab-grown gold is chemically identical to mined gold, sharing the same atomic structure, density, melting point, and even karat levels. True lab-made gold is created atom-by-atom in controlled conditions. They are also very rare and not yet widely available commercially, but yes, lab-grown gold is real gold.

Lab-grown vs mined gold: Price comparison

Lab-grown gold is not cheaper than mined gold; it is slightly higher because the production methods are technologically complex and are still scaling and navigating the market. The purification, certification, and alloying also add cost, just like the mined gold. Expect almost similar price tags between the two, because the purity level in today’s market is also the same.

Purity and quality comparison

Both lab-grown gold and mined gold can be refined up to 24k, i.e., 99.9% gold, and can be alloyed to 18k and 14k as well. The density, malleability, durability, and resistance to tarnish all remain the same. So, for jewellery, both hold equally under normal wear as long as the product meets the established carat and also the hallmark standards.

Understand the investment potential

Gold traditionally acts as a hedge against market inflation and uncertainty. It depends on carat purity with global gold prices, where it doesn’t matter whether it is mined or lab-grown. Mined gold has a well-established resale reputation, which is included in pawn markets and in bullion trades. Lab-grown gold can also be resold, but the visibility and standardised acceptance usually vary and depend on the certification.

Gold prices are rising

With gold prices hitting an all-time high, it only looks feasible to shift to lab grown gold as soon as it is made available in the country. What are your thoughts about the same?

6/7

Which one to choose?

If you prioritise ethical and environmental impact with transparency and traceability in your purchase, then opt for lab-grown gold, which will make you a sustainable buyer. But, if you’re focused on traditional investment profiles and wish to keep it as historical value with heritage, then earth-mined gold should be the one, as it will help you create a well-established resale network.

Security blanket

Think of gold as the financial world’s "security blanket" that never really goes out of style. While crypto can feel like a fever dream and the stock market often acts like a rollercoaster, gold is that steady, heavy thing in your hand that has meant "value" for literally thousands of years.

It’s essentially the ultimate hedge against the chaos of life. When the cost of living starts climbing or global headlines get a bit too shaky, gold tends to just stand its ground, acting like a silent guardian for your savings. Investing in it isn't always about chasing a massive, overnight jackpot; it’s more about the peace of mind that comes from owning something real, indestructible, and universally recognized. It’s a way of making sure that no matter how much the world flips upside down, your hard-earned wealth has a rock-solid foundation to sit on.
