'Flouting traditional norms'
The guyliner is no longer a novelty. It has evolved into a cultural movement redefining masculinity. “The guyliner can help any man pull off a mysterious, bold, Gothic look. With the rise of androgynous models who showcase unisex or gender non-conforming fashion, this is an exciting trend which has the potential of becoming more prevalent in the Indian fashion scene,” believes accessory designer Akassh K Agarwal.

From pharaohs to rockstars – the journey of the guyliner
While men are embracing makeup in the gender-fluidity reality of today, the guyliner can be traced as far back in time as ancient Egypt. Makeup artist Sean Joseph says, “Silent film actors like Charlie Chaplin wore makeup to highlight their expressive eyes and it later on became a sign of defiance and flamboyance for rock stars like David Bowie, Prince, Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger.”
Beginners can follow these tips:
  • Getting your eyebrows shaped first is essential for the look
  • If you’re scared to go all-in at once then try lining just the upper waterline. This will give the effect of a thicker lash line and define your eyes in a subtle way
  • Men produce more sweat than women, so one might opt for a waterproof formula
  • The colour of the eyeliner is an important factor. Black gives a more dramatic look, brown is more natural
