Comfy, laid-back and cool: The kaftan is a hot trend this season

With comfort taking precedence over style during the lockdown period, the no-fuss outfit, kaftan has made a huge comeback. In the last two months, the attire has found many takers owing to the comfort and carefree vibes it gives the wearer.

As the women who are returning to work can't seem to get enough of it, the laid-back outfit may just go mainstream in the Unlock phase too!

“Kaftans make for a great summer wear and pictures of celebs sporting them during the hotter months is proof that the trend is here to stay.Given the weather we have in India, these flowy outfits should definitely be in everyone’s closet” states fashion designer Garima Agarwal.

Those working remotely, yet struggling to look presentable on Zoom calls or Instagram live, shouldn’t look beyond kaftan to add a touch of style to their looks.

“Wearing a kaftan and attending a Zoom call will make one presentable without making it evident that they are trying hard for it. Besides, one doesn’t have to do much to style it up. Even a simple top knot bun goes with the look” says stylist Rekha Kanwar.

Kaftans are being sported by the likes of Kareena Kapoor Khan, Malaika Arora, Neena Gupta, Chrissy Teigen, Beyonce, Naomi Campbell among others.

Fashion stylist Kruthika Pillai explains, “Comfortable with bohemian-gipsy vibes, the garment has been a favourite piece of clothing for many celebs, models, and even the royalty. What makes it so desirable is how perfectly the outfit flatters all body types.”

One can even choose the length and cut of the attire based on the look they want to sport. “Be it length of the kaftan i.e. ankle, mid-calf or full length or the cut like straight cut, butterfly like silhouettes – the outfit presents a variety to choose from. Some even come with long slits in the front or sides, which can be paired with loose pants for an office look,” she advises. Chrissy Teigen has also proved that kaftans can also be a red carpet look.

Kaftans are mostly made with light and airy fabrics hence, they make for a hot summer trend. “Be it the breathable fabric they are made with, the sheer comfort of its loose cut, or the playful prints that go with the summer mood - kaftan is already dominating the fashion world right now,” says Giselle Arora, a fashion designer, adding, that age is no bar to rock this look!
