The popular two-strap sandals with statement buckles have always given us a sense of comfort and are a common sight on the streets of India. These buckle sandals bear an uncanny resemblance to Birkenstock’s strappy sandals, the German brand’s most iconic and widely worn design, almost synonymous with everyday comfort. However, the company is now making headlines in India, and not for the best reasons. From legal crackdowns on counterfeiting to accusations of design appropriation, Birkenstock has taken legal action to stop the production and sale of fake products across the country. This marks a strong stance against intellectual property infringement and Birkenstock is going all in.

This comes in the wake of similar controversies involving other global brands. Crocs recently received court approval to proceed with a nine-year-old infringement case, while Prada is already facing backlash for releasing Kolhapuri-inspired sandals.A report by Reuters stated that several teams of court-appointed lawyers carried out inspections in small factories in New Delhi and Agra, seizing products that were allegedly knock-offs of Birkenstock’s signature strappy designs. In its lawsuit, the company claims that counterfeit versions of its footwear are being sold not only in India but are also being exported globally.

Once beloved by hippies and medical professionals, Birkenstock has become a fashion staple in pop culture. The brand even found itself in the spotlight recently when Barbie actress Margot Robbie wore a pair of pink Birkenstocks in the final scene of the film, cementing its place in the quiet luxury trend.
