Is it just the beginning?

Do you still remember the white canvas shoes from your childhood that were required to be absolutely spotless and often felt like a chore? Those humble shoes have now evolved into coveted fashion statements and have become a major part of people’s lifestyles. Sneakers in India have come a long way. What started with global influence has now found its local innovation strength. But how did this shift and realisation happen, where the Indian market understood that this pair of sneakers is not just another pair of shoes in the wardrobe but is now becoming a symbol of status and identity?

The steadily rising demand

The rising demand for premium sneakers in India led to a realisation that the interest is legit, which then gave space to Indian retailers and brands to explore. What stood out was the quality, price, and comfort. Indian brands managed to deliver a luxury glow, while at the same time offering pairs made for long commutes, fitness routines, and a dynamic work culture. Just like our nation, the Indian sneaker business also witnessed diversity, where customers were able to find pairs based on their aesthetics.

The range was gradually increased

Indian brands primarily started off with basic sneakers that carried a Western essence. They then explored the sports segment, which included trail runners and walking and hiking shoes, and later moved on to court designs, skater pairs, and more. This didn’t happen overnight; brands explored, understood, and added a hint of their own signature as the range was expanded gradually. This shift expanded the consumer base, which now includes not only teenagers but also professionals and older adults.

How far we have come

According to rough market estimates, the Indian sneaker market was valued at USD 3.88 billion in 2024. Witnessing the rapid growth, it is projected to reach USD 5.93 billion by 2023, which means it is growing at an annual rate of 5.45 percent. This impressive growth is not just about design; it is a combination of comfort-focused design, fashion-conscious choices, and a dash of unique versatility.

Which is the crowd’s favourite?

In this grand empire, where there’s something for everyone, the low-top sneaker design holds the lion’s share. The lower-cut design makes them suitable for pairing with all outfits, such as jeans, joggers, shorts, and more. This type of design also improves ankle mobility, making it ideal for urban exploration and everyday commutes. With advanced cushioning designs and leather-to-canvas silhouettes, the low-top range is perfect mainly for style-conscious consumers.

Massive shift fuelled by pop-culture hype?

This massive shift has indeed been fuelled by a combination of pop culture, celebrity influence, and limited-collection hype. Several Bollywood celebrities increased sneaker brand endorsements, which ignited desirability. The influence was so strong that sneaker culture even found its way into Indian weddings. While premium global brands like Nike, Puma, Adidas, and more are still dominating the market, the shift towards Indian brand exclusivity is on the rise. India is elevating its position in the global sneaker scene, and we’re absolutely loving it.
