Here’s all you need to know about the story of the warrior king.
When is Maharana Pratap Jayanti 2026?
While Maharana Pratap was born on May 9, 1540, his birth anniversary is traditionally celebrated in accordance with the Hindu calendar. In 2026, Maharana Pratap Jayanti will be observed on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. History of the legendary king
Pratap was born at the Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan. His parents were Maharana Udai Singh II and Maharani Jaiwanta Bai. Pratap was going to be a leader. He became the king of Mewar in 1572. This was a difficult time. The Mughal Emperor Akbar was taking control of Rajput kingdoms. He was doing this with treaties and military power. Maharana Pratap said no to all the talks about becoming a Mughal helper. This made the Mughal Emperor very angry. It led to the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Pratap's army was very small compared to the Mughal army led by Raja Man Singh. The battle was very fierce. Neither side won clearly. Maharana Pratap ran away to the Aravalli hills. From the hills Maharana Pratap started using war tactics. He used guerrilla warfare. Later he started the Battle of Dewair in 1582. This time Pratap won a part of Mewar back. Maharana Pratap was a leader and he kept fighting for Mewar.
The Legend of Chetak
No story of Maharana Pratap is complete without his fiercely loyal horse, Chetak. During the Battle of Haldighati, a severely injured Chetak leaped across a wide stream to carry his master to safety before taking his final breath.
Support of the Bhil Tribe
Maharana Pratap's struggle was highly inclusive; the local Bhil tribal community of the Aravalli hills stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him, providing crucial military support, shelter, and intelligence during his years in exile.
How is the day celebrated?
The birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap is marked by grand cultural processions, equestrian rallies, traditional folk music, and dance performances across Rajasthan. People offer floral tributes at his statues, particularly at Haldighati and Udaipur, to keep his memories alive.
