Chhath, an annual four-day festival honouring the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya begins today-Saturday, October 25, 2025. Celebrated by members of the Hindu community across the world, the festival honours nature and life through elaborate and devotional rituals that each hold a deep symbolism. Predominantly, the Chhath Puja is observed by people belonging to the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Chhath Puja 2025: What does the festival mean?

Also known as the sun festival, Chhath Puja is a four-day fair that focuses on gratitude and devotion by standing in water with soop (a bamboo winnow) filled with prasad and diyas and offering arghya to the sun during sunrise and sunset.

The first day is known as Nahay Khay when people take a ritual bath and eat a satvik (pure) meal consisting of gourd, lentils, rice and more. On the second day, Kharna those celebrating observe a day-long nirjala vrat (waterless fast) throughout the day. After sunset, they offer kheer, roti and fruits to Lord Suyra and share them with family and friends. This is when the 36-hour fast begins and is observed till the next day.

The most important ritual begins on the third day known as Sandhya Arghya. This is when people gather around approved waterfronts carrying the soop, offer water and prayers at sunset and seek blessings of prosperity, health and happiness for the family. Women typically sing hymns about both the deities and create a memorable spiritual atmosphere. The fourth day begins with devotees offering water to the rising sun and breaking the fast by eating the prasad.
