St. Andrew’s Day, observed every year on November 30, is a national holiday in Scotland. Also known as Feast of Saint Andrew, the day that marks the beginning of Scotland’s winter festivities. St Andrew was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, who was martyred on an X-shaped cross. He is the patron saint of Scotland and Russia.
St Andrew holds a special place in Christian tradition. A fisherman by trade and the brother of St. Peter, St Andrew is revered for his missionary work. In 1320, St Andrew officially became the patron saint of Scotland at the time of the country's independence with the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath.
History of St Andrew's Day
The life and missionary work of St. Andrew are documented in Christian writings. According to legend, his relics were brought to Scotland in the 4th century by a monk named St. Rule, who was guided by a divine vision to the area now known as St. Andrews. Another story links St. Andrew to a pivotal 9th-century battle where King Óengus II saw an X-shaped cross in the sky before defeating the Anglo-Saxons, inspiring the Saltire flag's design. By the 14th century, St. Andrew was officially recognized as Scotland’s patron saint, and his feast day has since become a symbol of national pride and cultural heritage.
According to biblical accounts, Andrew played a pivotal role in introducing his brother Peter, later recognized as the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, to Jesus. When Andrew faced martyrdom for his faith, he was sentenced to crucifixion by Roman authorities. However, he requested not to be crucified in the same manner as Jesus, deeming himself unworthy of such an honor. Instead, he was executed on a diagonal cross on November 30, 60 AD. This X-shaped cross, known as the Saltire, became a symbol of St. Andrew and is prominently featured on Scotland’s national flag.
