Mother's Day, as the name suggests, is celebrated as a day of honouring mothers, motherhood and the influence of mothers in the society. While there are many special occasions for mothers and motherhood that are celebrated throughout the world-- the Greek cult to Cybele, Roman festival Hilaria, the Christian Mothering Sunday-- the true origin of
Mother's Day was in the Unites States of America in the 20th century.
This special day of honouring mothers was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis at a church in West Virginia. Ann Reeves Jarvis was a peace activist who attended to wounded soldiers during the American Civil Wars and she also created Mother's Day Work Clubs to help women deal with health issues. Upon her death in 1905, her daughter Anna Javis not only continued her mother's charitable work but also started campaigning to recognize Mother's Day as a holiday in the U.S. Anna believed that a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". Finally, the 1911 Mother's Day was officially recognised as holiday in all U.S states. Over the years, this special day is marked and celebrated in many countries throughout the world on different dates in the months of March or May; in India Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May which falls on May 13 this year.
