Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival which is celebrated every year in the honour of Lord Shiva. Celebrated on the 13th night and 14th day of the luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, this year the festival falls on Feb 26.

Maha Shivratri means "the Great Night of Lord Shiva". On this day the devotees conduct overnight vigils, worship the “shivling” and chant the name of Lord Shiva. On the next day, the devotees observe ritualistic Mahashivratri fast and offer bael leaves, milk and honey to the “shivling.”

It is said that a devotee who worships Lord Shiva very sincerely on the auspicious day of Shivratri is absolved of sins and attains moksha.
