The popular winter folk festival of Punjab, Lohri is widely celebrated in northern India on the 13th january every year. Many people believe the festival commemorates the passing of the winter solstice and marks the end of winter.


Lohri is a traditional welcome of longer days and the sun's journey to the northern hemisphere by Sikhs and Hindus in the Punjab region.



Hindus traditionally lit bonfires on this day in their yards after the weeks of the rabi season cropping work, socialized around the fire, sang and danced together as they marked the end of winter and the onset of longer days. After the night of bonfire celebrations, Hindus would mark Makar Sankranti and go to a sacred water body such as a river or lake to bathe.

Apart from the religious reasons, Lohri has become hugely popular because of the impact hindi movies create. A few of the popular Bollywood movies have shown actors celebrating Lohri with good music and dance and this has inspired and mostly educated non-punjabi north Indians to indulge in this festival.
