Guru Purnima, also known as Vyasa Purnima is one of the most auspicious days for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. This day is dedicated to gurus (religious and secular) and devotees to thank them for enlightenment.

This year, this occasion is being celebrated on 27 July, Friday. The term, 'guru' also has a meaning behind it. 'Gu' stands for darkness and 'Ru' means removing darkness.That's why a guru holds a lot of significance in someone's life and is considered someone who removes all the darkness from one's life. The day also has a historical significance and is known for the day Lord Shiva became the first guru. For Buddhists, this day marks importance as Lord Buddha gave his first sermon to the seven sages. In Nepal, this day is also known as teacher's day, where the devotees honour their gurus.

This occasion is celebrated on Purnima, which is the full moon day in the Hindu month of Asadha, which falls between the months of June and July.
