The importance of Eid for the followers of Islam

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which the followers of Islam observe fast from dawn to dusk. It is believed that in this month Allah (God) first delivered the verses of the Quran. Another theory suggests that the month of Ramadan was originally started when Prophet Mohammad migrated from Mecca to Medina.

During Ramadan, Muslims across the globe abstain from eating, drinking or smoking for the entire month from morning to evening. They break the fast in the evening once the Sun has set. This fasting phase ends after sighting the Shawwal moon. This year, Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be celebrated on May 3. This festival is celebrated with a lot of fervour. People greet each other, exchange gifts and feast on special delicacies. Here is how you can greet Eid to your friend and family in different Indian languages:
