Books to look out for in 2017

Mockingbird Songs: My Friendship with Harper Lee is a collection of letters between Harper Lee and one of her closest friends Wayne Flynt. The book by Flynt reveals the life on the private writer, in her own words. It's noted that Flynt left his home state of Alabama due to the violent racism in America but the publication of Lee's classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird inspired him to return in the 1960s, where he crafted a career in teaching and documenting Alabama history. Flynt and Lee later started to write to each other when she was living in New York, and shared stories, information and opinions about both personal and professional topics. Their correspondence which lasted for a quarter century--from 1992 till Harper Lee's death in February 2016--would be published in the book.

Arundhati Roy won the Booker Prize for her debut novel 'The God of Small Things'. Now, 19 years later she is set to come out with her next work of fiction titled 'The Ministry of Utmost Happiness' in June 2017. Roy's latest book will be published by Hamish Hamilton UK and Penguin India. Talking about her latest book she said in a statement, "I am glad to report that the mad souls (even the wicked ones) in 'The Ministry of Utmost Happiness' have found a way into the world, and that I have found my publishers...To publish this book is both a pleasure and an honour."

Internationally acclaimed best-selling author Haruki Murakami's latest book 'Kishidancho Goroshi' or 'Killing Commendatore' was released on February 24, 2017. Murakami has described 'Killing Commendatore' as a "strange story". It is about a 36-year-old portrait painter and how his life changes when his wife divorces him. The painter
then moves to an old house in Tokyo, that's when he meets a neighbour and finds the painting which is the book's title.

Salman Rushdie's new book 'The Golden House' is set to release in September 2017. The new novel is a modern-day thriller. It's a story about a wealthy family from Bombay (now Mumbai), who desperately seeks to forget a tragedy and are now reinventing themselves in New York City. "The Golden House is about where we were before 26/11, where we are today and how we got here. Here is a book that asks us -- in a post-truth world -- if facts and authenticity are necessarily the same thing, while never ceasing to be both resonant and entertaining," the publishing house stated. In India, the book will be published by Penguin Random House.

Internationally best-selling author Mohsin Hamid's latest book 'Exit West' is a story about two lovers- fiercely independent Nadia and the gentle Saeed. The story is set in the backdrop of a country which is on a brink of the civil war. It follows the journey of Nadia and Saeed who struggle to hold on to each other and emerge to an uncertain future and their existence.

Dan Brown's popular character Robert Langdon will feature again in the author's next thriller 'Origin' which would be out on October 3, 2017. 'Origin' thrusts Harvard symbologist Langdon into the dangerous intersection of humankind's two most enduring questions, and the earth-shaking discovery that will answer them, reads a statement on Brown's website. This will be the fifth Langdon thriller after 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Angels and Demons', 'The Lost Symbol' and 'Inferno'. It will also be available as an ebook and an audiobook.

Amish Tripathi recently announced the that the second book in the Ram Chandra series is titled 'Sita- Warrior of Mithila'. The book, which is coming out roughly two years after The Scion of Ikshvaku, would tell the story of Sita till the incident where she was kidnapped. 'Sita- Warrior of Mithila' would be out by May en- early June this year.

On the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, TV presenter and historian Lucy Worsley takes the readers into Austen's world. 'Jane Austen at Home' as the name suggests is about how Austen lived and looks at “the rooms, spaces and possessions that mattered to her”. The book would be released on May 18, 2017.

Olympian turned transgender woman, Caityln Jenner's memoir 'The Secrets of My Life' chronicles her life and struggles of coming out of the closet and finally becoming herself. Jenner disclosed herself as a transgender woman in April 2015 and now two years later is all set to release her memoir on April 25, 2017.

International bestselling poet-author Lang Leav, known for her titles Love & Misadventure, Lullabies, Memories and The Universe of Us- is all set to debut as a novelist this year. The New Zealand-based author announced on Twitter that her debut novel named 'Sad Girls' will release on May 30, 2017. 'Sad Girls' is a 'coming of age story, where young love, dark secrets and tragedy collide' reads a statement on the author's official website.

Hillary is all set to release two new books this year which would be published by Simon & Schuster. These two books would be Hillary's sixth and seventh published books. One of the books is said to be a collection of Hillary's personal essays inspired by her favourite quotations. It would also include her thoughts on her shocking defeat to Donald Trump in last year's election. The second book is a children's picture book version of her 1996 bestseller 'It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us'.

English author Philip Pullman announced recently that he will bring back the world of 'His Dark Materials' in three new books titled 'The Books of Dust'. The first book in the new trilogy series is still untitled and would be launched on October 19, 2017. Also, the new series is not a sequel to 'His Dark Materials'. "The [new] story begins before 'His Dark Materials' and continues after it... You don't have to read it before you read [the original trilogy]... this is another story that comes after it, so it's not a sequel, and it's not a prequel, it's an equal," Pullman told NPR.

Actor Tom Hanks began writing his debut book which is a collection of short stories in 2015 and is now set to release it in October, 2017. Titled 'Uncommon Type: Some Stories by Tom Hanks', the book features 17 stories. It will be published in hardcover, ebook and in audio with Tom Hanks reading the stories. Each story in the book is said to have involved a different typewriter, since Hanks is an avid collector of vintage typewriters and owns over one hundred of them!

Mark Twain's unfinished 16-page notes which was discovered in 2011 is now set to be released as an expanded version titled 'The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine' this fall. The unfinished story 'Oleomargarine' is about a poor boy Johnny who is given a magic seed. The seed grows into a flower, and eating it Johnny gets the power to understand animals. Meanwhile Prince Oleomargarine, who is kidnapped by giants, has been taken to a cave which is guarded by dragons. The boy and the animals then go on a quest to rescue the prince. The new book is said to have transformed Twain's 10,000-word story into a 160-page illustrated book for children with a post-modern twist and talking animals, giants and dragons, according to Nytimes.com. 'The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine' is expected to be out on September 26, 2017.
