Words which are being popularly used due to Coronavirus

The Coronavirus, which was first reported in December 2019 in China, has now been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The declaration has caught people's attention and has added to the worldwide panic as many don't really know what it means. Medical terms can sometimes be confusing and often misused. So, here we list down a few words which are being popularly used due to Coronavirus outbreak and their meaning. Read on!

Pandemic

Adjective: Occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population
Noun: An outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population

Example: With Coronavirus spreading across six continents and over 100 countries, it has now been declared as a pandemic by WHO.

Epidemic

Adjective:
1. Affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time
2. Excessively prevalent
3. Characterized by very widespread growth or extent : of, relating to, or constituting an epidemic

Noun:
1. An outbreak of disease that spreads quickly and affects many individuals at the same time
2. An outbreak or product of sudden rapid spread, growth, or development

Example: The Coronavirus started as an epidemic in China in December 2019.

Endemic

Adective:
1a. Belonging or native to a particular people or country
b. Characteristic of or prevalent in a particular field, area, or environment
2. Restricted or peculiar to a locality or region

Noun:
An organism that is restricted or peculiar to a locality or region

Example: Diseases like influenza are generally endemic as outbreaks can be controlled by vaccination or isolating patients.

Infectious

1a. Producing or capable of producing infection
b. Caused by or resulting from an infection with one or more pathogenic agents
c. Transmitting or capable of transmitting infection

2. Spreading or capable of spreading rapidly to others

Example: People who could be infectious of Coronavirus, should isolate themselves in order to prevent spreading it to others.

1. Transmissible by direct or indirect contact with an infected person
2. Bearing contagion
3. Used for contagious diseases
4. Exciting similar emotions or conduct in others

Usage: Coronavirus is a highly contagious disease.

A diseased state or an abnormal condition

Example: A person suffering from flu-like pathosis should definitely visit a doctor.

Noun:
1. A period of 40 days
2.a. Term during which a ship arriving in port and suspected of carrying contagious disease is held in isolation from the shore
b. A regulation placing a ship in quarantine
c. A place where a ship is detained during quarantine
3a. A restraint upon the activities or communication of persons or the transport of goods designed to prevent the spread of disease or pests
b. A place in which those under quarantine are kept
4. A state of enforced isolation

Verb:
1. To detain in or exclude by quarantine
2. To isolate from normal relations or communication

Example: People who have flu-like symptoms should self-quarantine themselves to prevent infecting others.

1. A disease or disorder of the animal body
2. An unwholesome or disordered condition

Example: The malady which originated in Wuhan, China was later named as Coronavirus aka COVID-19.
