'Sweet Valley High' movie gets new scriptwriter

Sweet Valley High is a book series which began in 1983. Set in a fictional town called Sweet Valley in California in the U.S. it follows the adventures of teenage twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield as they go through their teenage years. Though they look identical they have opposite personalities and the series shows them going through regular teenage problems like bullies and boys as well as some dramatic ones like kidnappings. It is written by Francine Pascal and a team of ghostwriters.

The series was a huge success with 181 books and it even had some spin-off series like Sweet Valley Kids and Sweet Valley University. It has a TV show based on it which has 88 episodes. It ran from 1994 to 1997. A movie based on it has been rumoured, started and forgotten several times but now Jessica Gao has been confirmed to write the script. She is taking over the project from Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Harper Dill who signed on to write the film in 2017. Hopefully this is a sign the project is going to be taken forward.

Though the book series is rather old, with it's original fans having long since graduated the intended age group for the books, the love for the series seems to be strong. A sequel titled Sweet Valley Confidential released in 2011 and made the New York Times Bestsellers list. A movie would likely entice nostalgic fans and possibly new generations.
