Six most evil characters in books

Every book is a different universe that is composed of the characters in it. For everything good, there exists evil so as to strike a balance in the universe. While the protagonist carries the action forward, it is the antagonist that brings about the elevations and falls in the plot and provides the much-needed adrenaline to the reader, making us realize that the evil characters are equally important for the story. We bring to you the six most evil literary characters that made our reading even more fun!

2/7

Dolores Umbridge from the ‘Harry Potter Series’ by J.K. Rowling

Even though Voldemort came time and again to destroy the order of things and events, it was Dolores Umbridge who managed to garner more hate than the Dark Lord himself in just a single appearance. Her disciplinarian persona was replete with monstrous cruelty and evil.

Miss Havisham from ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens

She adopts Stella only to turn her into a heartbreaker because she suffered heartbreak and was not able to recover from it, ever. Both Pip and Stella were by-products of the damage that Miss Havisham had suffered from in her grim past.

4/7

Lady Macbeth from ‘Macbeth’ by Shakespeare

After instigating her husband to kill the King, the lady takes on the guilt of a murder upon herself from which she is chronically running away. However, she does not provide her husband with the freedom of getting rid of that guilt or lessen it anyway.

5/7

Ferdinand from ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ by John Webster

The twin brother of the Duchess, Ferdinand overshadows Bosola- the acting antagonist who actively goes on to kill the Duchess. From killing her sister to getting her baby killed, Ferdinand also bore incestuous intentions towards his sister and was disturbingly evil.

6/7

Mrs. Trunchbull from ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl

An Olympic hammer thrower, Mrs. Trunchbull lives up to her description of Dahl as he calls her ‘a gigantic holy terror, a fierce tyrannical monster” that inspired fear in teachers and students alike. Mrs. Trunchbull bullied little boys and girls and sucked the life out of them, making her one of the most hated and evil characters of all time.

7/7

Humbert Humbert from ‘Lolita’ by Vladimir Nabokov

Despite being the murderer, paedophile, and manipulator that he is, he manages to coax the reader into believing that he isn’t as bad as his acts are. The narratives of Eros and the power that he weaves in order to justify his actions don’t hold any validity by the end of the narrative.
