Britney Spears' sister, Jamie Lynn Spears', donation from book sales rejected by mental health non-profit
Singer Britney Spears' younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, is turning into an author but she is in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. Jamie had announced on social media recently that she had finished writing her upcoming memoir 'Things I Should Have Said'. She had also shared in a post that she would donate the money through her book's sales to a mental health organization. But in an unexpected turn of events, the mental health organization declined Jamie's donation citing a huge backlash by people.
Jamie's book 'Things I Should Have Said' will be published by Worthy Books, an imprint of Hachette, in January 2022. According to the publisher, the upcoming book will be a “portrait of a wife, momma, sister, daughter, actress, and musician doing the best she could to show up for herself and teach her daughters to have the courage to love every part of themselves, too.”
Giving a glimpse of her memoir, Jamie had written in an Instagram post, "I’ve spent my whole life believing that I had to pretend to be perfect, even when I wasn’t, so for the first time I am opening up about my own mental health, because this process challenged me to have to be painfully honest with myself, and face a lot of hard things, that I normally would have just glossed right over like I was taught to. I owe it to myself, my younger self, and to my daughters to be an example that you should never edit yourself or your truth to please anyone else. I know I still have ALOT of learning to do, but I feel like finishing this book gave me closure on this “30-year long” chapter of my life, and hopefully helps anyone else out there who forgot their worth, lost their voice, or is trying to break an unhealthy cycle in their life."
She further wrote that she would like to donate a portion of the proceeds to the This Is My Brave, a non-profit organization, “because I know how scary it can be to share personal struggles, especially if you don’t feel you have the support or a safe space to do so, and they are doing amazing work to support and encourage people as they bravely share their experiences”.
But as soon as Jamie shared her news, This Is My Brave started receiving criticism from people supporting the #FreeBritney movement. Following this, the NGO decided to decline Jamie's donation. "We hear you. This Is My Brave was recently recommended to be a beneficiary organization for the proceeds from Jamie Lynn Spears' upcoming book. We have made the decision to decline the offer of receiving proceeds from the book sales," the NGO said in a post on social media.
For 13 years, Britney Spears' conservatorship was handled by their father James Parnell Spears i.e. the singer's personal and professional life was managed by him due to her troubled life and battle with mental health issues. It was only last month that the controversial conservatorship was finally suspended by a judge. A report by The Guardian reads, 'Britney did not name her sister directly in her public court testimony this summer, but did say that she “would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you”, and that “my family has lived off my conservatorship for 13 years”'. Meanwhile, Jamie hasn't publicly commented about Britney's controversial conservatorship.
