Bill Gates' books recommendation

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is an avid reader and on his official blog, he frequently shares his thoughts about the books that he has read. Recently, Gates shared his book recommendations for this year's summer reading which is based on what he has read so far this year and liked. "None of them are what most people think of as a light read. All but one deal with the idea of disruption, but I don’t mean “disruption” in the way tech people usually mean it. I’ve recently found myself drawn to books about upheaval (that’s even the title of one of them)—whether it’s the Soviet Union right after the Bolshevik revolution, the United States during times of war, or a global reevaluation of our economic system," he wrote, talking about his book recommendations.
So, here is Bill Gates' full summer reading list for 2019 which includes both fictions and non-fictions. Don't forget to add these books to your reading list:

The Rosie Result by Graeme Simsion

Australian novelist Graeme Simsion's 2019 book 'The Rosie Result' is the final novel in the Don Tillman trilogy, following 'The Rosie Project' (2013) and 'The Rosie Effect' (2014). Recommending this novel, Gates wrote on his blog, "If you’re looking for something that’s more of a typical summer book, I recommend Graeme Simsion’s 'The Rosie Result'. (And if you haven’t read the first two books in the Rosie trilogy, summer vacation is the perfect time to start!)."

The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates

'The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World' is Melinda Gates' debut book wherein she shares the lessons she learnt from people she met while working and helping those in the most urgent need in the last two decades. "I know I’m biased, but it’s one of the best books I’ve read so far this year," Gates said about Melinda Gates' book. Interestingly, the book was also recommended for reading this year by former US President Barack Obama.

Upheaval by Jared Diamond

"I’m a big fan of everything Jared has written, and his latest is no exception. The book explores how societies react during moments of crisis. He uses a series of fascinating case studies to show how nations managed existential challenges like civil war, foreign threats, and general malaise. It sounds a bit depressing, but I finished the book even more optimistic about our ability to solve problems than I started," Gates reasoned for recommending Jared Diamond's 'Upheaval'.

Nine Pints by Rose George

English non-fiction writer Rose George's book 'Nine Pints: A Journey Through the Money, Medicine, and Mysteries of Blood', as the title suggests, is a book about the mysteries surrounding blood. The author chose to write about it as she is suffering from a rare condition called premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which has inadequate treatments. Most humans have nine to 12 pints of blood in their body; and so, in this book George tells nine different stories revolving around blood. For instance, she writes about the girls she met in Nepal who deal with the taboo surrounding menstruation or how an Indian entrepreneur named Arunachalam Muruganantham developed low-cost sanitary pads for poor women thus helping communities. "I’m a big fan of books that go deep on one specific topic, so Nine Pints (the title refers to the volume of blood in the average adult) was right up my alley. It’s filled with super-interesting facts that will leave you with a new appreciation for blood," Bill Gates wrote.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

Sharing his views on Amor Towles' 2016 best-selling novel 'A Gentleman in Moscow', Gates wrote, "It seems like everyone I know has read this book. I finally joined the club after my brother-in-law sent me a copy, and I’m glad I did. Towles’s novel about a Count sentenced to life under house arrest in a Moscow hotel is fun, clever, and surprisingly upbeat. Even if you don’t enjoy reading about Russia as much as I do (I’ve read every book by Dostoyevsky), 'A Gentleman in Moscow' is an amazing story that anyone can enjoy." The book will soon be made into a TV series starring Kenneth Branagh.

Presidents of War by Michael Beschloss

Michael Beschloss' 'Presidents of War' gives a fresh and intimate look at what made American leaders decide about entering major wars in the 19th century. The author also interviews war survivors and shares his findings in original letters, diaries, and once-classified national security documents in this book. Gates shared that his interest in all aspects of the Vietnam War was the main reason for him to pick up this book. "By the time I finished it, I learned a lot not only about Vietnam but about the eight other major conflicts the U.S. entered between the turn of the 19th century and the 1970s. Beschloss’s broad scope lets you draw important cross-cutting lessons about presidential leadership," he further added.

The Future of Capitalism by Paul Collier

"Collier’s latest book is a thought-provoking look at a topic that’s top of mind for a lot of people right now. Although I don’t agree with him about everything—I think his analysis of the problem is better than his proposed solutions—his background as a development economist gives him a smart perspective on where capitalism is headed," Gates wrote about Paul Collier's book 'The Future of Capitalism: Facing the New Anxieties'.
