The news was announced on UNHCR's official website on December 15, 2020. Nair has been appointed as a high profile supporter of UNHCR "to help create trust, awareness, and advocate about the situation of refugees in India".

Confirming the development, Nair said in a statement, "One of the basic human rights is to be able to call a place home. When that is snatched away and it happens in various parts of the world on a daily and routine basis, it is a moral outrage in a world where technology has made so much... Honoured to be nominated as a high profile supporter of UNHCR in this moment when raising one’s voice about the refugee crisis is more urgent than ever”.

Nair, who was a Write India author-mentor for season one of the short story writing contest, has published several books including-- six children's books, three audiobooks, a poetry collection, a collection of essays, along with two plays. She also adapted her children's book titled 'Muezza and Baby Jaan' for refugee kids in 2017.

Oscar Mundia, UNHCR’s Chief of Mission in India, welcomed the author for her new role. Some other UNHCR high profile supporters include Alphonso Davies, Danny Ocean, MIKA, Maya Ghazal, and Stanley Tucci to name a few, according to UNHCR's website.
