6 revelations by Jeffrey Archer at the Times Literature Festival 2021

Lord Jeffrey Archer needs no introduction. The literary giant was a speaker at the Times Litfest 2021, which is being held virtually this year. Jeffrey Archer was seen in conversation with bestselling thriller writer Ravi Subramanian in a riveting session about writing, books and life. Here are some things that Lord Archer revealed about himself in the session:

He considers himself a storyteller, first and foremost, and then a writer

"I think I am a writer as well but I think I am first and foremost a storyteller. It's a God-given gift, like being a ballet dancer, opera dancer or violinist, none of which I could do," Lord Archer said during a session at the Times Litfest 2021.

3/7

He believes that good storytelling cannot be taught

"Writing can be taught. And if you have a good education and you are well-read, there is no reason why you wouldn't be a good writer. But actually telling a story is a gift; it's a god-given gift... The gift of making someone turn the page so they can't put the book down cannot be taught. Otherwise, the teacher would be doing it!," Jeffrey Archer said.

His books are released in India first!

With his books being sold in 93 countries with over 275 million copies worldwide, Jeffrey Archer chooses to release his books in India first! Here's why: "The day the book comes out anywhere in the world, some entrepreneurial Indian buys one copy, flies back to India and has it printed and on the streets three days later and there’s nothing I can do about it,” Lord Archer told author Ravi Subramanian at the Times Litfest 2021.

5/7

He believes that women will lead the world in future

"I have seen in many schools, girls who are going to really take the lead for the first time, and India will be very different in 20-30 years time," he said.

6/7

Jeffrey Archer is very particular about his writing routine

The author admitted to being particular about writing daily and keeping his pens and other stationary in a certain way. He revealed, "I am frightened that if I break my routine, I will start breaking it every day, and then I will stop writing."

7/7

He believes that writing is hard work

And here's a piece of advice from the master-storyteller for aspiring writers, "People think anyone can sit down and write a novel...If you want to be a writer, first and foremost accept it's damn hard work."
