Dr MK Ranjitsinh's fourth book 'Mountain Mammals of the World' released in New Delhi
Dr MK Ranjitsinh dedicated his latest book 'Mountain Mammals of the World' to his four grandchildren. “My first book was dedicated to my parents, the second to my mentors, the third to my wife and two daughters, and this fourth, the last one, is to inspire my four grandchildren to go to the mountains. The only mountain that they see is on the screen of their computers," he said at the book launch.
As the title suggests, 'Mountain Mammals of the World' is a definitive guide about larger mammals found in the mountains across the world. The book features 58 species and a total of 119 mountain mammal taxas from worldover, along with pictures and maps. "The three main aspects that have been an inspiration for this book are the mountains and their citizens of the world, Buddhism, and the state of Kashmir... From my classification, I have written about 119 taxa. Fortunately, I have seen most of them. The continent of Asia has 86, Buddhist-dominated regions of Asia have 39, and the state of Kashmir has 18," Dr Ranjitsinh further told the audience at the event.
The author and his longtime friend Dr Karan Singh, a former politician and the titular Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, also reminisced about their earlier days working for the Indian government and wildlife conservation in India. He recalled how the Asiatic Lion (found in Gir, Gujarat) was once considered the national animal of India and the discussions they had to replace it with the Tiger. Praising the book and his dear friend, Dr Karan Singh also said, "This book will undoubtedly be his greatest work, destined to go down in history as a valuable encyclopaedia of information regarding mountain mammals."
The book's foreword is written by legendary ecologist Dr George B Schaller, while the introduction is written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. 'Mountain Mammals of the World' is published by Penguin India.

This nutria was captured by Christopher Arnold while grooming itself. The nutria seems to be holding its head as if it has realized something really heartbreaking. Nutria are amphibious rodents found in South America.
This image shows a newborn seal laughing at something. Pinnipeds, commonly known as seals, are widely distributed carnivorous, semi-aquatic mammals found in marine environments, especially in freshwaters.
This funny image shows a raccoon sharing a secret with its friend, while a third raccoon stares directly at the camera. These nocturnal creatures can be found throughout the world, from North and South America to Asia.
Photographer Jörn Clausen took this image in 2015 during a visit to the Farne Islands in the UK. The image shows two Atlantic puffins, native to the Atlantic Ocean, seemingly engaged in a serious conversation.
This ground squirrel, also known as a zeisel, was calling out to its family that it had found food. The small squirrel holds the leaves of a yellow flower, which is visible in the image. Squirrels are native to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa, and were introduced to Australia by humans.
Leslie McLeod captured this image of a female cheetah leaving scent messages for a potential partner on various trees while on safari in Kenya. However, the cheetah looks as if it's hiding and is just about to surprise someone by jumping out.
Captured on the ice off the coast of Rausu, Japan, this eagle looks like it’s skating on ice with impeccable concentration. Steller’s sea eagles are the largest and most powerful of all eagles.
This gentleman looks like a model fit for the cover of a magazine. This gecko was captured in the Namib Desert and can be found almost anywhere on Earth except Antarctica. Unlike most lizards, geckos can vocalize with chirps and barking noises.
