Avoid these common vegetable DIYs on the skin

From potato juice spot treatments to fresh tomato facials, it seems DIY skincare trends have taken over social media, and websites are thriving on the name of ‘natural beauty hacks'. Since these ingredients are available in our kitchen and are usually budget-friendly, some remedies can damage the skin barrier and trigger severe irritation when used incorrectly. If you think using any and every vegetable on your skin can bring you a glow, you’re mistaken. Here are 5 vegetable DIY tricks that should be heavily avoided on the skin.

2/6

Tomato juice for bright skin

Tomatoes are often used at home as a natural tan remover and a natural glow booster because they contain vitamin C and active antioxidants. But understand that applying raw tomato is naturally acidic and can irritate your skin barrier when rubbed directly on your face. It can cause redness, instant burning, lead to dry skin, trigger irritation, and strip your skin's natural oils.

Potato juice for dark spots

Potato juice is one of the most viral DIY remedies in India. While potatoes contain enzymes and vitamin C, there is no strong evidence that they effectively remove dark spots. It can irritate your compromised skin barrier, trigger itching and cause redness. Also, if you’re struggling with inflamed acne, rubbing a raw potato can make things worse.

4/6

Onion juice for acne scars

People often apply onion juice to the hair scalp for hair growth, but on the skin, it can react quite differently. Raw onion usually contains sulphur compounds, which can be extremely irritating. From watering to stinging, it can result in allergic reactions that can be severe, sometimes triggering dermatitis as well. Also, there is a risk of severe eye burning, as the surrounding area is quite delicate.

Lemon and cucumber DIY face pack

Cucumber alone generally helps hydrate and soothe the skin in the short term. But when you mix lemon with its extremely low pH, it instantly disrupts the skin’s natural protective barrier. This combination can cause chemical burns, sun sensitivity, and hyperpigmentation, and it can also trigger phytophotodermatitis, which is a painful inflammatory skin reaction.

Garlic paste on acne

Garlic is known for its antibacterial properties, but raw garlic is far too potent for direct application on the skin. It can cause chemical-like burns, leave dark marks, lead to peeling, irritate active acne, and sometimes permanently damage sensitive skin. So, if someone suggests this overnight pimple cure to you, prepare for more inflammation, pain, and intense redness.
