Why celebs are setting their hair on fire
Hairstylists are adopting velaterapia, an ancient beauty technique that involves ‘burning’ the hair with a candle, instead of trimming them, to get rid of split ends.
Thousands of women around the world, who want to get rid of split ends without trimming their hair and compromising on its length, are choosing to burn their hair with the technique, velaterapia.

Also called candle cutting, this is a traditional Brazilian beauty trend which has become popular after supermodels like Alessandra Ambrosio, Barbara Fialho and Isabeli Fontana started endorsing it. They’ve even put up pictures of them getting the treatment done online.
How it works
In this two-hour candle therapy, stylists twist tiny sections of hair and burn off split ends by moving a lit candlestick up and down the twisted sections. This treatment allegedly cauterises the damaged ends and opens the hair’s follicle to retain moisture. The reason it’s done in small sections of twisted hair is to ensure that only the split ends/ flyaway stick out, and burn. This is followed up with a deep conditioning treatment. It can be done every three months.
Why it’s hot
Usually, you need to get a haircut or a trim to get rid of split ends, which shortens the length of the hair. Many women want to retain the length of their mane and hence, are looking at this bizarre treatment as an option.
