When it comes to skincare, many people think moisturising is enough. However, Dr Panduranga K. R., Principal Scientist, Personal Care R&D, Himalaya Wellness, says hydration is equally important.“Moisturising mainly seals the skin’s surface to reduce water loss. Hydration increases the water content within the skin,” says Dr Panduranga. He explains that well-hydrated skin looks plumper, feels softer and works better as a protective barrier against pollution, weather changes and irritants.

According to him, lack of hydration can make the skin look dull, tight and rough. “Over time, dehydration can weaken the skin barrier and increase sensitivity,” he adds. This is why he advises choosing products that support hydration and not just surface moisturising.Dr Panduranga highlights aloe vera as a key ingredient. “Aloe vera has high water content and water-binding nutrients that help the skin retain moisture. It also supports the skin’s natural repair process,” he says. Regular use can leave the skin feeling soothed and refreshed. He also points to cucumber. “Cucumber is rich in water and antioxidants.
It helps calm and replenish tired or sun-exposed skin without feeling heavy,” he notes.Vitamin E is another important ingredient. “Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental damage and helps reduce moisture loss by strengthening the skin barrier,” says Dr Panduranga. He concludes, “Hydration is a daily essential. Ingredients like aloe vera, cucumber and Vitamin E help maintain healthy, resilient skin over time.”
