Summer breakouts getting out of control?

The summer season might be great for vacations, but it's one of the hardest times of the year for your skin. With rising temperatures comes sweat, humidity, and excess oil production, which trigger stubborn acne flare-ups and make the situation worse for some. While occasional pimples are common, some breakouts can turn into something more and require the assistance of a dermatologist. Let’s learn about the different stages of acne and when it's the right time to visit an expert.

Stage 1: Mild to moderate acne

If you see small whiteheads and blackheads, or tiny bumps on the forehead and nose, then it is caused by clogged pores and sweat buildup. You simply need to wash your face twice a day with a salicylic acid cleanser and avoid using heavy creams. This can slowly turn to red, inflamed pimples with tender bumps, which happens when your skin barrier is struggling. In such cases, you can use niacinamide products with benzoyl peroxide spot treatments.

Stage 2: Severe inflammatory acne

But if your acne turns into painful cysts and looks like large, swollen pimples with deep nodules spreading across your jawline and leaving marks, then it's time to take the situation under the guidance of an expert. These are severe cases of acne that can permanently damage your skin and leave deep scars, which, if left untreated, can lead to serious issues. A dermatologist will recommend prescription creams, antibiotics, peeling sessions, and a hormonal evaluation.

Stage 3: Hormonal and chronic acne

Lastly, if you’re having breakouts around periods, adult acne that keeps returning, cystic acne, and pimples around the chin and jawline, then it must be because of hormonal changes, PCOS, poor sleep cycle, and stress. Your doctor will help you with hormonal tests, lifestyle changes, oral medication, and prescription retinoids.

Summer skincare tips to prevent acne

Start by using lightweight products like oil-free sunscreen and gel-based moisturisers. Never skip your sunscreen, as UV damage worsens acne marks and pigmentation. Do not leave sweat on skin for a long period of time, as it can clog the pores. Clean your pillow covers twice a week during summer, skip using too many acids and scrubs on your face, and, lastly, stay hydrated.
