Suffer from very dry skin? These are the reasons!

Have you ever thought of the actual cause of dry skin? It is caused by an impaired skin barrier and dysfunction or deficiency in the necessary healthy fats in the top layer of the skin. Normally, the top layer is made of dead cells and natural oils, this helps trap moisture to keep the skin smooth and soft. But if there's not enough water in the top layer, it results in dry skin. Let's look at some more causes of dry skin.

2/6

Fragrance

You might have never thought but fragrance can irritate dry skin or make it worse. The fragrance is also a common source of allergic contact dermatitis. You might see a reaction of fragrance on your dry skin sometimes. Hence, you need to avoid deodorants and products that contain too much fragrance.

3/6

Soaps and shampoos

There are many soaps, detergents and shampoos that subtract the moisture from your skin and scalp. This is because they are formulated to remove oil. Thus, it's very crucial to pick face washes, body washes and laundry detergents that aren't harsh on your skin.

4/6

Genetics

Dry skin can very much be inherited. Around 10% of the population suffers from dry skin and have greater chances of developing eczema. If you have dry skin, it could be because it runs in the family. Hence, it is very important to keep yourself moisturised at all times.

5/6

Hard water

When tap water contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium, it's called hard water. These minerals can leave a film on your skin that causes dryness. Invest in a home filtration system and it will help you protect your skin from hard water. Add skincare products to your routine that contain vitamins A and C.

6/6

Long hot water showers

It might be too tempting to stand under a steaming-hot water shower for a long time, especially during the cold months. But this habit can end up creating issues with your skin. It dries out your skin and takes away all the moisture from your skin. Limit the time of your hot water showers and make sure you moisturise your damp skin as soon as you are out of the shower.
