Alright, let’s cut to the chase, if you’re dealing with hair that’s just not growing, shedding like crazy, or feeling thinner than you’d like, you’ve probably already gone down the rabbit hole of hair growth hacks. And somewhere along the way, you’ve definitely stumbled upon peppermint oil and rosemary oil, right?

They’re the two MVPs in the natural hair care world, both claiming to boost growth, wake up sleepy follicles, and give you that thick, flowy hair you’ve been dreaming of. But which one actually works faster? Let’s break it down.

​Meet the hair heroes

Peppermint Oil is that minty-fresh essential oil that gives you the cooling tingle, you’ve probably felt it in shampoos. It’s packed with menthol, which helps increase blood circulation when you massage it into your scalp. More blood = more nutrients = hair that grows faster (hopefully).

Rosemary Oil is the OG. It’s been around forever and has been used in Ayurveda and even Mediterranean cultures to treat thinning hair, itchy scalps, and dandruff. It smells all herbal and calming like a spa in a bottle and is believed to boost cell turnover and even block the hormone DHT, which is linked to hair loss.

​What does the science say?

Okay, no boring textbook stuff, promise.

A study from 2014 tested peppermint oil on mice, and the results were wild. It actually helped hair grow faster than minoxidil (aka Rogaine), the stuff dermatologists prescribe. Pretty impressive.

On the other hand, rosemary oil went head-to-head with minoxidil in a 2015 study - this time, on actual people. It worked just as well as minoxidil after 6 months, without all the itching and side effects.

So, science is backing both. But if you’re looking for faster results? Peppermint oil seems to act quicker. That being said, rosemary oil is super effective too, it just takes a little longer.

The good stuff:

Great for oily or itchy scalps

Heads-up:

It’s super strong. Like, eyes-watering strong. You have to dilute it with a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, argan, pick your fave). Don’t even think about applying it straight to your scalp.

Why people love it:

Strengthens hair at the root

Calms inflammation and irritation

Helps reduce dandruff and dry scalp

Can even slow down graying and hair thinning

Safe for most scalps and gentle enough for frequent use

Only downside?

It’s more of a slow burn. You won’t see crazy results in two weeks, but give it a couple of months, and it really starts working its magic.

​How to use both (Without wrecking your scalp)

Here’s the deal - no matter which one you go for, never apply essential oils directly. Always mix a few drops (like 2–3) with a tablespoon of carrier oil.

Massage the mix into your scalp for 5–10 minutes (great excuse for a little self-care), then leave it on for at least an hour. You can even sleep with it overnight if your scalp is cool with that. Do this 2–3 times a week, and thank yourself later.

And always, always do a patch test first. Because no one wants a red, itchy scalp in the name of hair goals.

Prefer something gentle and great for overall scalp health? Rosemary’s your girl.
