How to dye your hair naturally with Coffee
Why Coffee?
Coffee contains natural pigments (tannins) that can temporarily stain the hair, especially if you already have brown or dark brown strands. It enhances your natural colour, adds depth, and gives your hair a little extra gloss. Plus, caffeine is thought to stimulate hair growth and improve scalp health. So it’s a win-win—not only can you subtly colour your hair, but you might just get stronger, shinier strands in the process.
Who should try it?
Let’s be clear, this isn’t a permanent hair dye, and it won’t take your hair from blonde to brunette overnight. It’s best for:
Brunettes or people with naturally dark brown hair who want a richer tone
People with greys who want to slightly blend or darken them
Anyone looking for a temporary colour refresh
Those who want to avoid harsh dyes or are sensitive to chemicals
If you have very light or bleached hair, coffee might give a very subtle tint, but don’t expect a dramatic transformation.
What you will need
1 cup of strong brewed organic coffee (cooled)
2 tablespoons of coffee grounds (optional but helps deepen the colour)
1 cup of leave-in conditioner or hair mask (preferably unscented)
A mixing bowl and spoon
Gloves (unless you want brown-stained hands)
An old T-shirt or towel (it can get messy!)
Shower cap or plastic wrap
Step-by-step: How to dye hair with coffee
Step 1: Brew your coffeeStart by brewing one strong cup of organic coffee. The darker the roast, the better the staining effect. Let it cool completely, you don’t want to burn your scalp!
Step 2: Mix it all together
In a bowl, combine your cooled coffee, a couple of tablespoons of coffee grounds, and your leave-in conditioner or hair mask. The conditioner helps the coffee mixture stick to your hair and makes the application smoother.
Step 3: Apply to clean hair
For best results, start with clean, damp hair. Section your hair and begin applying the coffee mixture from roots to ends using your hands or a hair dye brush. Massage it into your scalp and make sure every strand is coated evenly.
Step 4: Let it sit
Once your hair is fully covered, pile it up and cover with a shower cap or some plastic wrap. Let the mixture sit for at least 45 minutes to an hour. The longer you leave it, the more intense the stain.
Step 5: Rinse (No shampoo!)
Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water, but don’t use shampoo, this might wash out the coffee colour. You can use a bit of conditioner if needed. Let your hair air dry and voilà! Richer, glossier hair, naturally.
Tips to make it work even better:
Repeat for a darker effect: Because coffee is a natural dye, the colour builds up gradually. If you want a deeper tone, repeat the process once or twice a week until you get the shade you want.
Use apple cider vinegar as a rinse: Some people like to use an apple cider vinegar rinse afterwards to help seal the colour in.
Avoid heat styling right away: Let your hair rest for a day or two before styling with heat. It helps the colour settle in better.
Use an old pillowcase: There might be slight staining if your hair is still damp when you sleep, just a heads-up!
How long does it last?
Since it’s not permanent, coffee hair dye typically lasts around a week or two, depending on how often you wash your hair. If you love the results, you can top it up weekly or use it as a conditioning mask every few days for maintenance.Bonus: Benefits beyond colour
Dyeing your hair with coffee doesn’t just give it a colour boost—it can also:
Add shine and softness
Make your scalp feel refreshed
Slightly exfoliate with the coffee grounds
Help reduce hair shedding thanks to the caffeine
If you’re not ready to fully commit to a salon visit or box dye, coffee is an easy, natural option that comes with zero commitment and a bunch of hair benefits. It’s perfect for a weekend self-care ritual or a pre-event glow-up. Plus, there’s something kind of magical about turning your morning brew into a beauty treatment, isn’t there?
So go ahead, brew yourself a cup, pour another on your head, and let nature work its magic.
