A round or heart-shaped face can get away with a really short length. Women with long faces could keep the length nearer to the shoulders and with plenty of volume. Keep the look modern with the right styling products – a light oil just at the ends of the hair will keep it in good condition and using a spritz of texturising spray keeps the look cool and laidback.

It’s an ultra-classic style reminiscent of the 50, popularised by actress Grace Kelly. We recently saw Jennifer Lawrence in the film 'American Hustle' rocking a 70s version of this. This is one of the most requested hairstyles for the biggest celebrity red carpets, since it brings luxury to any look but still means that the full detailing of the dress on display can be seen. It might surprise you to learn that this look is actually most popular with the youngest actresses out there, who want to bring a touch of the golden era to their style. Set your hair in big rollers first, then once it’s cooled, comb your hair to the parting you desire – a soft side part can be used to achieve the exact look above. This must be one of the most popular hairstyles, having not gone out of fashion since the 50s. To achieve a classic look, make sure you carefully blow dry hair using a large round brush and then use rollers to hold the curl. Once the rollers have cooled, remove and backcomb at the roots to achieve the style loved by glamazons including Cheryl Cole and Kim Kardashian. Adds hairstylist Sylvia Chen, "Want your hair to seem a little more lived in? Comb through the curls using your fingers and use salt spray to give it that sexy, tousled look."
Pile it high

A top bun with lots of volume will never go out of style, since it’s perfect for framing the face without drawing attention away from makeup. Prep the hair with a mousse, focussing on the roots right down to the mid-length of your hair, and tip your head upside down while you blow dry to give volume even more of a boost. If you have long hair, then loosely twist the hair and pin with Kirby grips, or you can cheat with a doughnut, available at most high street or beauty shops. Placing the hair right on top of the head produces more of a top knot look which is ultra-modern, but if you prefer something a little more classic, then pin hair further down the back of your head for a style that’s reminiscent of the icons of the past who will never be out of style.
