Oils as heat protectants

No matter how gentle we think we’re being, most of us are putting our hair through a lot. Between blow-drying, flat ironing, curling, coloring, and tying it up tight for that slick bun look, our strands rarely get a break. And while leave-in conditioners and serums help, there’s one old-school remedy that actually goes deep: Hair oiling.

Not all oils are created equal, though. Some just sit on the surface, making your hair look glossy, and then vanish by midday. Others go beyond the shine, nourishing your scalp, sealing in moisture, and protecting your hair from breakage caused by everyday styling. Here are five oils that do more than coat they care. Tried, tested, and trusted.

2/6

Coconut oil: The OG multitasker your grandma swore by

There’s a reason coconut oil is still a favorite across generations. It’s rich in lauric acid, a fatty acid that binds well with hair proteins. What does that mean for your strands? Less protein loss, less breakage. It penetrates deeper than most oils, which is why it’s often used as a pre-wash treatment. If you heat style often or have chemically treated hair, this can be your best line of defense.

For best results, warm a bit between your palms and apply it to your scalp and ends at night. Braid your hair loosely and wash it off the next morning. Bonus: it smells like summer.

3/6

Argan oil: The weightless shield for styled hair

Nicknamed “liquid gold,” argan oil is a godsend for those who straighten or curl their hair often. It's loaded with Vitamin E and antioxidants that smooth the cuticle and reduce frizz, without making hair look flat. Unlike heavier oils, argan sits lightly on your strands, adding gloss and taming flyaways without stickiness.

Use it as a post-styling finish. Just a drop or two on your fingertips, rubbed into the ends, can instantly revive tired hair. It’s especially good for dry climates and frizzy hair types.

4/6

Jojoba oil: The scalp whisperer

If your scalp feels dry, flaky, or irritated after regular styling, jojoba oil might be your secret weapon. It’s the closest in structure to the natural sebum our skin produces, which means it balances oil production without clogging your follicles. It also strengthens the roots and keeps the scalp moisturized.

Massage a small amount into your scalp once or twice a week. You can leave it overnight or just for 30 minutes before shampooing. Over time, you’ll notice fewer flakes, and if you have oily roots with dry ends, it helps balance both.

5/6

Sweet almond oil: The underrated shine booster

Often overlooked, sweet almond oil is light, hypoallergenic, and packed with magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids. It helps reduce breakage from tight hairstyles (think: Ponytails and top knots) and gives hair that soft, glassy finish without greasiness.

It’s especially helpful for those with wavy or textured hair who want a smoother look without heat styling. Just warm a few drops in your palms and smooth it down the mid-lengths and ends post-shower, or mix it into your conditioner for an extra boost.

6/6

Amla oil: The Indian powerhouse for stressed hair

Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is rich in Vitamin C and has been used in Ayurvedic hair care for centuries. It strengthens the follicles, promotes growth, and even helps prevent premature graying something heat-styling and coloring can accelerate. Amla oil is especially useful if your hair feels weaker than usual or you’re noticing more strands on your comb.

Use it once a week before washing. It works beautifully when slightly warmed and massaged into the scalp. Some versions are mixed with coconut or sesame oil to make it easier to apply.
Insider tip: If the smell is too strong for you, mix it with a few drops of lavender or rosemary oil.
