5 beverages that secretly damage your skin

Drinks which are bad for your skin

We often think skincare is all about what we apply on our faces - serums, masks, moisturisers, and fancy facials. But the truth is, what we sip daily can either make our skin glow or make it break out. Our morning chai, evening coffee, or even that colourful “health drink” from the supermarket, they all impact the skin more than we realise.

If you have been wondering why your skin looks dull or breaks out even after a solid skincare routine, your drinks might be to blame. Let’s uncover the top five beverages that are secretly ruining your skin, especially in the Indian context.

2/7

Excessive tea

Most of us can’t start the day without a strong cup of chai. But when that one cup turns into three or four, trouble begins. Tea, especially when over-brewed or consumed with lots of sugar and milk, can dehydrate your skin.

Caffeine acts as a diuretic, meaning it makes your body lose water faster. This leads to dry, tired-looking skin. And if you love adding two spoonfuls of sugar or condensed milk, it can cause a spike in insulin levels, which may lead to increased oil production and acne.

Swap it with: Herbal teas like tulsi, chamomile, or mint. They’re calming, caffeine-free, and loaded with antioxidants that actually heal the skin. If you can’t live without chai, try cutting down to one strong cup a day and balance it with plenty of plain water.

3/7

Sugary soft drinks

Those fizzy, colourful sodas are basically liquid sugar bombs. They give you a quick energy rush but also cause glycation, a process where sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping your skin firm and youthful. The result? Sagging, dull skin and premature wrinkles.

Indian summers make it so tempting to grab a cold cola, but regular consumption can also trigger breakouts due to high sugar and artificial additives. Even the “diet” versions aren’t much better, artificial sweeteners can mess with your gut health, which reflects directly on your skin’s clarity.

Swap it with: Coconut water or homemade nimbu pani (without too much sugar). They hydrate and refresh you naturally while supporting your skin barrier from within.

4/7

Packaged fruit juices

That tetra pack of orange juice sitting in your fridge might look innocent, but most packaged juices contain more sugar than actual fruit. Even the “no added sugar” ones are loaded with concentrated fruit extracts, preservatives, and flavouring agents.

These can spike your blood sugar just like a soft drink does, leading to inflammation and collagen breakdown. Over time, your skin can lose its natural glow and elasticity. Also, the lack of fibre in these juices means your body doesn’t process the sugar well, leading to internal imbalances that show up as acne or dullness.

Swap it with: Freshly squeezed juice with the pulp intact or whole fruits like oranges, papayas, and apples. Whole fruits give you fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants, all skin-friendly nutrients that no packaged juice can match.

5/7

Alcohol

A weekend cocktail may seem harmless, but alcohol is one of the quickest ways to strip your skin of moisture. It’s a strong diuretic that dehydrates your entire body, making your skin appear lifeless and flaky the next morning. Over time, frequent drinking can also dilate your blood vessels, leading to redness or broken capillaries, especially around the nose and cheeks.

In Indian climates, where we already deal with humidity and pollution, alcohol’s dehydrating effect hits even harder. Plus, sugary mixers like soda, tonic, or fruit syrups add to the skin stress.

Swap it with: Sparkling water with a slice of lemon or cucumber, it looks fancy and keeps you hydrated. If you do drink occasionally, balance it with extra water and avoid sugary cocktails.

6/7

Energy drinks

Energy drinks may seem like your saviour on long workdays or gym sessions, but they’re loaded with caffeine, refined sugar, and synthetic ingredients that your body (and skin) don’t love. The high sugar spikes your insulin levels, leading to inflammation and acne. And the caffeine overload again dries out your skin from within.

Some energy drinks also contain high sodium levels, which cause puffiness and water retention, especially under your eyes. You might think you’re powering through your day, but your skin might be silently paying the price.

Swap it with: A banana smoothie or fresh coconut water for natural energy. Even plain black coffee in moderation is better than sugar-laden energy drinks.

Hydration is the real glow secret

You don’t need fancy detox juices or collagen lattes to get glowing skin, plain water works wonders. Hydration keeps your skin plump, improves elasticity, and helps flush out toxins.

If you find plain water boring, infuse it with mint leaves, lemon slices, cucumber, or a few tulsi leaves. These natural infusions not only make water tastier but also add subtle nutrients and antioxidants your skin will thank you for.

7/7

Is the sip hurting your skin?

Beautiful skin starts with what you put into your body, not just what you apply on it. You don’t have to completely give up your favourite drinks, but moderation and balance are key.

When you choose water, herbal infusions, and fresh homemade beverages over sugary or dehydrating ones, your skin begins to reflect that inner health. Over a few weeks, you’ll notice less dullness, fewer breakouts, and a natural, healthy glow, the kind that no highlighter can fake.

So the next time you’re about to reach for that extra cup of chai or fizzy cola, just pause and ask yourself: “Is this sip helping or hurting my skin?” Your body and your mirror will always give you the answer.
