It''s one tradition that has taken a long time to change. A guy making the first move comes from a thought process now gone redundant, men no longer being superior to women. For Guysville is changing, an increasing number of women are taking on roles previously thought of as typically male. So why not the right to approach the man of her choice? Chandigarh Times takes a look at a trend that is proof of how much a mindset is game to change, in a supposedly ''small town''.
1x1 polls
A few self-assured women share their views.

"I would definitely make the first move, except I just haven''t met a guy that stood out enough for me to try it. But if a girl sees someone she likes, I think she should go for it," collegiate Preeti Sharma says. And contrary to what others might think, women are undeniably taking the initiative, whether at nightclubs, discotheques or even in the office. "I don''t think it makes a woman look cheap or desperate. Besides, men have been sticking their necks out and getting rejected for years. A strong woman who wants total respect and admiration from her man should have no problem going up to a guy and letting him know she''s interested and available," avers Jas Lakhmna, a city-based fashion designer.

"Women are free and masters of their own wills. There is no reason for them to feel uncomfortable about approaching men. The traditional male and female roles are no longer valid and it is time for women to be equal partners in relationship building. I think women should go up to a man, even if they are turned down," psychologist Shashi Sethi affirms.

It''s not just women, several of the Gen X men find the concept of a woman approaching them very flattering. "Men love it when a woman makes the first move. It''s exciting, makes the man feel wanted and allows him to express himself more confidently as things progress. Also if not anything else, it takes a lot of pressure off the guy," computer professional Rohan Dhawan reveals.

However there are those who have their doubts. "I think it would scare the guy off, for most men are still stuck in their old-world upbringing. And anyway, it just never happens. Even the most sexually aggressive woman isn''t usually making a move per se; she''s just making it very clear that she wants the guy to," call centre executive Ranjit Singh opines.

A tussle that seems to be coming to a conclusion, does this mean a freedom for women that only men have enjoyed till now? We''ll just have to keep our eyes and ears open to find out!
nikita.singh@timesgroup.com
