VILLUPARAM: A 38-year-old woman set herself on fire, hugging her two daughters, aged five and three years, in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district on Saturday. All three were charred to death while the woman’s father, who tried to save them, died of suffocation.
Her nephew, aged four years, and her two brothers sustained minor injuries and were admitted to a government hospital. Police said M Draviyam had shifted to her parents’ house along with her two children two years ago following differences with her husband, Madurai Veeran (40).
On Friday, Veeran reached the house of his father-in-law, G Ponnurangam (78), at his invitation to discuss the matter. Ponnurangam and his two sons, P Vijayakumar and P Sadanantham, were talking to Veeran in front of their house around midnight when they heard screams coming from the house. They rushed inside and were shocked to find Draviyam and the two children on fire. They attempted to save the three, but in vain.
