KOHIMA: In 60 years since it attained statehood, Nagaland has never elected a woman MLA. This is surprising in a state where female voters outnumber males. Nagaland has 6.55 lakh women voters against 6.52 lakh men. This time, all eyes are on four women candidates who are trying to create history by becoming the first woman to be elected as a legislator in the state.
The four women in the fray out of total 183 candidates are Hekhani Jakhalu of NDPP in Dimapur-III seat, Rosy Thompson of Congress in Tening seat, Salhoutuonuo of NDPP in Western Angami seat and Kahuli Sema of BJP in Atoizu seat. The state had sent a woman as its LS representative way back in 1977 when Rano Mese Shazia was elected on a United Democratic Party ticket.
