Will act against MU faculty member for remarks against Rahul: Maharashtra minister

NEW DELHI: The

Maharashtra government

on Thursday confirmed that Mumbai University faculty member Yogesh Soman has been sent on forced leave for making offensive remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi last month.

"Professor (Yogesh Soman) has given an offensive statement against Rahul Gandhi. A professor's work is to teach children, not to give statements like these," Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.



Deshmukh added that further action will be taken against Soman.

Soman, Director of the department of

Academy of Theatre Arts

, had posted a video criticising Rahul Gandhi over his remarks "I am Rahul Gandhi and not Rahul Savarkar" which the latter had made at a public meeting in Delhi.

Student organisations had sought action against Soman earlier for posting "derogatory" remarks.

Congress leaders had said such political comments on public platforms was against service rules of government officials.

The BJP had questioned whether the action against Soman was not intolerance.
