Wife of jawan who spoke out against Army alleges threat to husband’s life

DEHRADUN: Sumit Devi, wife of Naik

Ajmer Singh

-- who had some time back uploaded a lengthy video on social media alleging bias against jawans in the Indian Army- lodged a complaint in a local police station on Friday evening stating that her husband’s life was in danger. Devi alleged that her husband was being sent to a border post in Rajasthan along with his unit where she feared his life would be put in danger.

Singh is currently posted in an artillery regiment in Dehradun and is facing a court of inquiry for posting an hour-long video on social media in January in which he had made several allegations against the Indian Army. He had also sent a written complaint to PMO in this regard.

Meanwhile army officials have said that the court of inquiry against Singh was nearing its end and fearing the outcome, he along with this wife had taken this step. “Ajmer Singh was absent from duty on April 21 and a court of inquiry is in progress to ascertain his violation of cyber security rules. He is just trying to malign the Army,” said a serving Colonel who is part of the court of inquiry.

He added that the jawan has “neither been harassed nor ill-treated."

“Ajmer Singh is staying with his family and is drawing full salary. The fact that a disciplinary action has been ordered has motivated him and his wife to publicise wrong information.”

Devi who could not be reached despite several attempts, has stated in her complaint, “I fear for my husband’s life. Since the court of inquiry is being conducted in Dehradun, my husband should stay here instead of being sent away.”

Meanwhile, police officials when asked about the case, claimed that they found no evidence that Singh’s life could be in danger. “As of now, there is nothing to show that Ajmer Singh is under any kind of threat. We have come to know that he is undergoing a court of inquiry which is an internal matter of the Army and therefore, we are in touch with their officials as well,” said Sweety Agarwal, SSP, Dehradun.
