Why religion & caste based campaigns are good for India

A wise politician once told me politics in India works only around the Big Three factors – religion, caste, and income (rich vs poor). The rest – policymaking, governance, development – may all be nice to have and discuss, but it’s the Big Three that decide which way the wind blows.
Even within the Big Three, income, or the rich-poor factor, is somewhat neutralised. This is because all political parties claim to and must be pro-poor. There’s no upside in siding with the rich, who are in a minority anyway. Hence, all parties must demonstrate pro-poor policies and actions, from freebies to cash transfers.
